2020 WOTS

CANCELLATION STATEMENT ON

CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)

Wednesday 22nd April 2020

With much sadness and regret, the Committee of Sligo Masters Swim Club has agreed that the 2020 Ocean FM Warrior of the Sea must be canceled. We have also ruled out the possibility of staging the event at a future date this year due to the fact that the WOTS is a tidal swim and no other dates suit this year.  All registrations will be carried over to 2021.

The decision has not been an easy one for the Committee as 2020 was the WOTS 10th Anniversary event. Also that so many athletes have been looking forward to the event ever since the fantastic conditions we had in 2019. Nonetheless, we are agreed that this is the right decision for all concerned; members, volunteers, competitors, spectators, partners and safety crew.

We have taken this decision after much deliberation, and in consultation with Swim Ireland, The Sports Council and current Government restrictions and recommendations. In so doing we have considered a number of factors, including the following:

  • Latest Government guidance, in particular travel restrictions, and social distancing requirements, limitations on large gatherings and the withdrawal of emergency services support for mass gatherings;

  • The limitations imposed on athletes training programmes and preparedness for what is a truly tough open water swim.

  • Our operational options and their implications, both practical and financial.

Our highest concerns have been the health and safety of all those involved in the staging and running of the WOTS, as well as wider public health and the swims role in society’s efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19.

We very much hope that the situation in Ireland will have improved significantly by 18th July. However, given the magnitude of the Covid-19 crisis, Government social distancing measures and health and safety restrictions in force, it will simply not be possible to have all the background preparations completed in time for the event. Our biggest concern would be for the safety of the competitors who undoubtably would not have had sufficient training going into the event.

We have taken a close look at the registration process and have decided the best option for all concerned is to roll-over all entries to the 2021 event. This way competitors do not lose their Eventbrite fees and will not be required to pay them again for next years event.

Should you however wish to receive a refund, please email sligomastersclub@gmail.com and we will be happy to arrange a refund for you. Refunds will be made available until 30th May 2020.

Sligo Masters Swim Club would like to thank you for your understanding during these difficult times and look forward to welcoming you back in 2021 for what we hope will be a fantastic 10th Anniversary celebration.

Kind regards

Scot & all at SMSC committee.
